Carex Design Group staff (a.k.a my wife Julie and I) spent the lunch hour at WDVX’s Blue Plate Special in downtown Knoxville, Tenn. for some live music courtesy of a great band called Hoots and Hellmouth (they’re also playing at Barley’s tonight).
So what does this have to do with landscape design? Not much, that’s true. But as music lovers, Julie and I can often be found sitting on our patio listening to our favorite tunes. For us, there are few other activities that scream summer (and relaxation!) like sitting on the patio with a cool drink and good music.
To help you enjoy your own outdoor space a little more this summer, we’re sharing our list of favorite “front porch loungin'” songs.
1. Front Porch Loungin’ by G-Love
The name says it all really. Lyrics like “sittin’ round strumming guitar, wasting time” and “lemonade I’m drinking, sinking into this music,” are good instructions for summer time lounging.
2. Non-Fiction by The Black Crowes
The Black Crowes are a must have for any summer playlist, especially the Croweology album which is an acoustic greatest hits. On the Croweology album, there is a fantastic version of Non-Fiction that is slowed down and smooth with very deliberate and catchy grooves.
3. Soul Child by Shawn Mullins
This tune is classic Shawn Mullins with its acoustic guitar, steady beats and gospel overtones. It’s equal parts inspiration and heartache, with great piano fills and backing vocals.
4. Jolene by Ray Lamontagne
It’s not the Jolene most in the South are familiar with but its a powerful tune. It’s a rough and tumble road story that involves enough anguish and heartache to pull at your heart strings. Lamontagne’s powerful raspy voice has hints of Joe Cocker and his storytelling via song is very reminiscent of Bob Dylan.
5. Breakdown by Jack Johnson
If there’s one artist who embodies Summer, it’s Jack Johnson. This song, led with a ukulele, evokes a beach vibe that’s perfect for a hot, lazy day.
