“I just can’t picture it,” is a somewhat common response when a landscape architect or designer shares his or her vision for a customer’s landscape design. It was even the response this landscape designer got from his wife when we set about redesigning our own backyard landscaping in Knoxville, Tenn.
So what do I do when faced with such a response (whether from my wife or a customer)? 3-D modeling is a great tool to which I can turn.
Although two-dimensional landscape design drawings can be quite beautiful and communicate a design well, three-dimensional models are generally a quick and easy way to illustrate a landscape design in an extremely visual way. I use them most often when I’m trying to showcase a new outdoor living space or outdoor kitchen.
“The 3-D images are wonderful! I can picture it and it gets me excited about the project.

The process of creating a model also helps me to improve upon my original design. When I’m working on a 3-D rendering of a landscape design for an outdoor kitchen or outdoor living space, I get to give all the elements a second thought. Whether it’s the thickness of a countertop, the way in which the materials complement or contrast with one another or the feasibility of a particular design element, models can help me iron out every detail, and ensure our customers are getting the best end-product possible.
Here are just some of the 3-D renderings or models we’ve created over the past year:
