Old Corkscrew Golf Club is a Jack Nicklaus-designed championship golf course. Bob Graves, now owner of Carex Design Group, led the landscape design efforts for this course when he worked for Landscape Design Services, the landscape design arm of Nicklaus Design.
The Old Corkscrew property was covered in ancient oak trees and pine forest. Because the course owners were eager for the course to be certified by the Audubon Society, Bob found ways to minimize the impact of the landscape construction, save the expansive natural oak hammocks and many other trees. The landscape design also involved creating and reclaiming wetland areas. This project is also a wonderful example of how the landscape design can be incorporated into the strategy of play. Bob worked with the course designer to blend the landscape design with the course design, evident in the way the waste bunkers and wetland areas that creep into the course elements.
