Starting a Landscaping Project Can Be Daunting. Find Answers to the Frequently Asked Questions We Get From Prospective Clients
Why do I need a landscape architect?
Planning is essential to create the best product and use your money wisely. Having a plan created by an experienced landscape designer or landscape architect makes the bidding process easier and enables you to accurately the compare bids you receive from various contractors.
An experienced designer or architect will take into account details and conditions you may not have considered, plan for projects you may want to do in the future and work with you to get the most out of your budget.
With years of experience in landscape construction, we’re well equipped to look for potential pitfalls, anticipate additional phases of work and prepare you for the process.
Don’t all landscape companies have designers?
Some companies do, but oftentimes landscape construction companies rely on employees and sales people who aren’t educated or trained in landscape design or landscape architecture.
Bob Graves, owner and designer at Carex Design Group, has a degree in landscape architecture from Purdue University, an accredited and nationally recognized program, and is a licensed landscape architect in Tennessee, which means his knowledge has been tested and he’s required to continue his education regularly to keep his license.
I watch a lot of HGTV, can’t I do most of this myself?
Maybe. Many landscaping projects can be done by a homeowner. Here’s what you should consider:
- Do you have the knowledge of plants and other materials to choose appropriate items for the space?
- Do you have the tools needed to complete the job?
- Do you have the knowledge and experience to avoid potential pitfalls?
- Can you complete the job within the desired timeframe?

Do you give free estimates?
Yes. We offer free estimates and consultations for both landscape design and landscape construction projects, although we are not a landscape construction company. We know the industry well and can estimate your project construction costs and find the appropriate landscape contractor for your project.
How much does a design cost?
The cost varies depending on the size of the property, type of materials, type of work to be designed (irrigation, lighting, planting, hardscapes, etc.) and desired project timeline. In most cases, we can provide an on-site estimate for the design fee, and we can design to nearly any construction budget.
What time of year should I consider getting a landscape design?
In East Tennessee, anytime is good but it depends on when you want to do the work. If you hope to enjoy an outdoor kitchen in April we should be designing it in December or January in order to work out the details, secure your contractor and allow time for construction, which could take 2-5 weeks. If you have questions about timing, call us at 865-765-5550 or e-mail bob@carexdesigngroup.com.
Can you help me find the right contractor for my project?
Yes we can. Carex Design Group has a network of preferred area contractors who we know and trust. We can manage the bid process for you and make suggestions on which contractor is best for the type of installation you need. If you choose a Carex Design Group preferred contractor to build your project, there is no cost to you for the design.
How much should I invest in my landscaping?
As a general rule, your landscape should be about 10-15 percent of the value of your home, depending on the area, your neighborhood and the size and style of your home. That percentage includes everything outside the home — driveway, walkways, patios, decks, planting, irrigation, lighting and lawn. Keep in mind that your complete landscape doesn’t have to be done all at once. When you start with a master plan, you can complete the work in phases as your budget allows while still ending up with a beautiful and cohesive final product.
