The Carex Design group team enjoyed another great

The Carex Design group team enjoyed another great Field Trip on Friday to check out our projects under construction. We stopped in Rarity Bay to see nearly complete projects by @magnolialandscapeconstruction and @integrity865 , then dropped in on Magnolia Landscape Construction's project in Lenoir city, and finished with @knoxvilleleaflawn 's Farragut build.

Today’s World Landscape Architecture Month #WLAM

Today’s World Landscape Architecture Month #WLAM post is about Career Path. I’ve been fortunate to work with a lot of talented people and have enjoyed an interesting journey.
An introduction to the industry first happened while I was a student at Purdue University. I worked two seasons at Koehler Brothers Landscape and Garden Center in Lafayette, IN helping customers make plant decisions, caring for nursery stock, joining the install crew, and getting to do the occasional quick-sketch for homeowners.
Between junior and senior years at Purdue, I embarked on a 14-month internship in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, FL working for one of the state’s first registered Landscape Architects, Taft Bradshaw. From high rise developments to neighborhood masterplans, this experience gave me a wealth of knowledge in conceptual designs, construction details and plan production in a design firm. I then returned to Bradshaw, Gill and Associate upon graduation and worked another year growing my skills.
I left Bradshaw Gill without real direction and landed in the golf industry as a landscape designer for Nicklaus Design, founded by legendary golfer, Jack Nicklaus. The next five years included designing landscapes within golf courses all over the world. Notably, I worked extensively on courses in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and throughout the US. Not a bad gig for a guy in his 20’s!
A recession and desire to be home more led to a transition out of Florida to east Tennessee and working nearly five years for Wildwood Land Design, a design-build based in Knoxville. I reacclimated to residential design work and honed my understanding of landscape construction.
In 2014 we made the leap to start our own Landscape Design company. Our desire was to fill the gap between landscape design and landscape installation, keeping a close relationship with landscape contractors. Who knew we were on to something? 2024 marks 10 years of Carex Design Group and now includes a fun, creative team of six!
