When everything is looking cold and gloomy in East Tennessee from winter rainy days, there’s one plant we love to bring surprising winter blooms to your Knoxville landscaping: Camellia. One of our favorites is the October Magic® White Shi-Shi™ Camellia with its beautiful white blooms, but I also love the well-known ShiShi Gashira, which features pink blooms.
There are so many varieties of Camellias and each has something to offer.
The White Shi-Shi will grow to three or four feet wide and tall while other varieties are larger such as the Yuletide Camellia, which is quite a bit bigger at about six feet wide and eight to nine feet tall with bright red blooms appropriate for the holiday season.
Most Camellias are a wonderful evergreen choice for a focal point in the shade, but could also work as a foundation plant. Although full sun can be tolerated, I’ve found they do best with partial shade and well-drained soil.
Camellias are also relatively easy to care for in that a yearly pruning in early spring (after flowering) will likely do the trick.
The best part about Camellias is the extremely long blooming season that typically lasts from late fall into winter to brighten any Knoxville landscape.
