As a landscape architecture firm in Knoxville, often our clients come to us without a firm vision for their landscaping. That was the case for one homeowner in Maryville’s historic College Park neighborhood who knew he wanted a backyard where his daughter would be excited to spend time. As a landscape architect, the blank slate was exciting!
The Problem
Although this backyard had an existing pool, which goes a long way in getting the cool-factor approval from kids, the space was mostly lacking in the interest. It certainly wasn’t a place where a kid (or a dad!) would want to waste away summer days. Here’s what it looked like on our first visit …
The Design
After meeting with the client and taking measurements, I went to work on a landscape design. Because I had several vertical elements in mind — a pavilion, a raised patio, etc. — I opted to upgrade the landscape design plans to 3-D, which helped properly convey these vertical elements. In the 3-D landscape design plan, we included the new pavilion, a raised patio and pool deck overlay as well as new plantings and low voltage lighting to complete the look. We also planned a new irrigation system for the backyard to make sure the new plants thrived, without extra effort from the homeowner.
Landscape Construction
For this project, we also managed the landscape construction, partnering with our friends at Nails Creek Outdoor Design and Construction, to make sure the client got exactly what he was expecting. In the finished outdoor space, we used Belgard Dublin Cobble pavers and Tandem Wall block. The pavilion is built from solid cedar and features a pergola on the side perfect for relaxing hammock. Additionally, the space between the pergola and pavilion was the perfect place for party string lights.
