For a recent backyard landscaping transformation in Farragut, Tenn., our client requested a sitting area with shade, a water feature and landscape lighting. To deliver on those wants, our first step was to create a 3-D landscape design to help our client envision the space. Here’s the “before” photo …
… and here’s the design we cooked up:
After finishing the design in collaboration with our client, we got to work managing the construction.
In the end, our clients had a beautiful space that included a paver patio, pergola, water feature, landscape lighting, a paver walkway and more.
The Paver Patio
We designed the patio to include the three-piece Dublin Cobble paver from Belgard paired with Belgard’s Belair Wall block. We used an eye-catching new color — Harvest Blend — for the wall block, which I really love for its richness against the gray of the pavers. The wall around the seating area creates a cozy atmosphere and makes additional seating available, which we felt was a must-have element because our client likes to host her friends in the space.
The Pergola for Shade
To continue to define the seating area and ensure our client got the shady area she wanted, we designed a cedar pergola with iron finishes.
The Water Feature
The natural stone water feature is the showstopping element of this landscape design. The look mimics a natural pond and contrasts with the more formal structure of the paver patio and cedar pergola.

The Plant Material and Landscape Lighting
To soften the space, we used many of our favorite plants including Dwarf Mondo grass, Fine Wine Weigela and Coralbark Maple (also know Sango Kaku Japanese Maple), which we lit with Vista Professional Outdoor Lighting for an extra punch of color in the evenings.
The Walkway
During construction, which we managed with our friends at Integrity Lawn and Landscapes, our client decided she wanted the patio to be a bit bigger and requested a walkway from the backyard to the driveway on the side of the house. We happily obliged by designing a meandering path of the same material as the paver patio.
